Though they are safer when you go to a point of sale, the problem now is people with scanners who can walk by you and scan your credit cards or ATM cards just by walking by you IF you don't have the cards shielded by a RFID wallet or individual RFID covers for each card.
So, you need to research where to either get individual aluminum micro fibre sheiths for each individual card or buying an RFID secure Wallet to keep them in.
So, chips are great but now you have to get protection while you have them in your wallet or pocket as well.
