So, was on a flotation device when the 5.0 earthquake hit and I was watching television with my son then (he would have been 20 something then). So, when I ran out to the pool I saw the water going all over the place and luckily it wasn't also going into the house because I closed the doors. So, as the ground moved about a foot or more of water took off in various directions. I told my 5 year old to stay in the center of the pool so she wouldn't hit her head on the side of the pool. She did as I said and so came through this. Since she was 5 she first asked why all the water was going out of the pool. I told her there was an earthquake happening but to stay calm and swim to the center of the pool away from the sides which she did.
AND this was ONLY a 5.0!
Imagine what could happen in a 6.4 if you were in a pool or your little kids were in a pool and didn't know what to do?
I was about 22 or 23 in 1971.
The following is the scariest earthquake I had to ride out:
And this was only a 6.5 to 6.6 earthquake
Start date: February 9, 1971
Magnitude: 6.5 Ms; 6.6 Mww
Casualties: 58–65 dead; 200–2,000 injured
Total damage: $505–553 million
