My wife accidentally knocked her towel rack down in the bathroom and was pretty
upset about it. So, I thought about it and realized I could fix it with some spackling
compound and a putty knife I had in the garage. So, even though the spackling compound
was very old I still was able to get enough of it to make it work (sort of). I let it dry
24 hours(I put it in the oversize hole that was left when the towel rack was knocked
loose). then I unscrewed the screw from the plastic device that will spread inside the hole
to hold the rack in place when you screw the screw into it (sometimes called an expansion
bolt or screw) and then I used the screw after it dried as a drill sort of to open a new hole.
then I used my Makita drill and automatic screwdriver to screw it in and out a few times
to make the hole a little larger. Finally I used the small phillips head I had mounted on
the Makita to drill out a little larger so I wouldn't knock out too much plaster driving
the Expansion part of the screw in device into the plaster board. Then I got a ball peen
hammer (without a claw) so it would be less dangerous for this in close up work like
this and gently drove the expansion part back into the wall. Lastly I hand tightened
the screws knowing they couldn't get too tight or they might defeat their whole purpose.
Then I mounted the towel rack holder (only one of the two's hole into the plasterboard
was damaged so I only had to repair one) and I remounted the mounting brackets and
put the towel rack back in place. It seems to work fine but whenever you mount anything
into plasterboard remember it is a little iffy to begin with because it's not wood or metal.
