For this reason it is always better to write about things you know about the most. However, if that doesn't interest you then write about what you love to write about and this will help you perfect your writing. However, have you ever read someone's writing when you realize one day that they have had zero experiences like what they are writing about?
This is the real problem of what subject matter you choose to write about unless you are going to tell people up front that you have no idea what you are writing about in the preface of the book or essay and that you are just winging it.
So, what you write about can be very important. But, if you love to write about some particular subject I would just go and write about it anyway. But, if you are planning to sell what you have written you need to have some idea what you are writing about. But, if you are writing just for fun to develop your writing skills then go for it.
Writing is kind of like Art. Beauty is in the eye of the beholder!
If you love something go for it! It's what makes life worth living!
