How?
They found a species of mosquito that never caries the malaria. They took this species and isolated the bacteria that allows this. They then genetically altered the mosquito and made this trait a dominant trait in mosquitos. So, they are thinking that within 5 years by taking this species of mosquito all over the world they can completely eradicate malaria on earth.
This is great news because about 1/2 million people die of malaria every year still here on earth.
So, with all the bad news there is some good news out there.
