On the one hand they are trained soldiers and used to the camaraderie of soldiers and so many find their way into being police when their veteran service is over and this is true around the world by the way in regard to police forces worldwide.
The good part of this is they are used to a certain way of behaving on the job. The bad part of this is that it means that the police around the world are not "normal" people in that most normal people haven't ever shot at or killed people at some point during their lives.
So, police tend to be in some ways (to the average person's way of thinking) sort of inhuman (or no longer fully civilized) because of their veteran's experiences and their police or fireman experiences.
So, they all tend to keep to themselves and stay around people who are like them (other firemen and policemen) who understand their PTSD from all experiences.
I understand this a little because my step son is a retired Fire Captain who is now around 50 years old who I helped become a volunteer Fireman when he was 17. He loved this lifestyle and stayed with it until he made Fire Captain in the CDF here in California until he retired.
