To understand what is happening today you need to see that a few Republican Congressmen and Senators are trying to overthrow the will of the electorate by taking away their right to vote for President of the United States and to take that right for Congress Alone to choose the president.
This is a bloodless (so far) coup attempt by Trump and his loyal followers like a Gang or mafia attack on our democracy in a Republic. So far, this attack has been unsucessful.
As long as Trump doesn't try to start martial law he soon will be out of office. I'm not sure what happens if Trump attempts martial law however. The head of Trump's White Racist Proud boys is already in jail and many others likely a part of this attempted coup will likely be arrested or shot too at this point.
It is unknown at this time whether Trump will have to leave the country to avoid prosecution because after this the whole nation will be after him to serve time in Jail for defiling our Constitution in this way.
