If we look at the rate of increases of infections worldwide we likely haven't reached the peak of cases or deaths so far worldwide

Why?

There are many unknowns first of all. In richer countries where vaccines are available rates could start going down because of Vaccinations. However, all the unknowns are still a problem like:

How long am I immune from the original coronavirus?

How long do I have to wear a mask to protect myself and others from the original and the variants?

There are many many questions and very few answers here.

So, likely if you are going to go on a vacation especially by plane you might want to go within a month or two after your last vaccination so at least you won't get the original coronavirus while traveling even though you might get one of the variants. So, this all is still pretty serious.

Could you still die from a variant even if you are vaccinated?

This is possible because the answer is still somewhat unknown because new variants are being discovered worldwide every day now.

For example, the UK variant also mutated in New York and California so now you have UK New York variants and UK California variants for example.

Another problem is the very worst and most deadly variants don't come from big cities but from remote locations on earth all over the place like the Brazilian variant that killed 9 children over a month or more ago already in a tribe in northern Brazil.
