This happened in January of 1986 with my family. I was visiting Dharmshala, India at the time with my wife and 3 children ages 10 to 14 at that time.
I had gone to Dharamshala with Geshe Lobsang Gyatso who was born in Kham, Tibet in the 1930s and passed away here in the U.S. in the late 1990s I believe in California. He traveled with the Dalai Lama from Lhasa, Tibet to India when he escaped the Chinese on foot and by a boat on a river with the Dalai Lama. This happened in March of 1959.
A student of Geshe Lobsang Gyatso obtained permission for us to visit Ling Rinpoche who ran Tibet for the Dalai Lama until he came of age at age 18 I believe. So, we walked up above Dharamshala into the mountains as a family together with Thubten who was Geshela's student since he was a child in Tibet. Eventually we came upon a rock house with a slate roof all hand built and Thubten knocked on the door. We were let into the small living room of the house where Ling Rinpoche was sitting on a table in the Maitreya Mudra position. Thubten spoke very good English because he was a mountain climbing guide up peaks in the Himalayas so he acted as our translator for the two monks attending Ling Rinpoche.
I can only share my experience of this situation rather than what Thubten and the Tibetan Buddhist monks were experiencing. From my vantage point as an intuitive from America I experienced the Maitreya heaven flowing out from Ling Rinpoche's body. My own father had passed away about 6 months before this and I sensed Ling Rinpoche wasn't coming back physically from this meditation. I asked through Thubten whether Ling Rinpoche was coming back and they said no. But, he was not really dead because his body would be decomposing so somehow he was still alive though I doubt he was still breathing. So, in this sense he was a "living Buddha" in deep meditation from which he body would never get up and walk or move again but not decomposing as human body's tend to either.
So, because this was something I never had heard or seen before and since I experience the Maitreya Heaven flowing out from him in a really profound way it changed my life in many ways ever since and I live since then inside Maitreya heaven to a greater or lesser degree ever since then.
Later I was in a Tibetan Temple and saw a wax figure which was looking exactly like a lama. Later I was reading a book back at Castle Lake near Mt. Shasta. I think it was called:
