I bought it in 2009 because I was considering at that time going around the world on it. I had just watched Long way Round which is both a book and a TV series about Ewan McGregor and his friend's adventures going around the world on BMW bikes that are Dualsports like my KLR 650 that can literally travel on any kind of road imaginable. They are designed for this. I bought a KLR 650 because it is more like a VW Bug in that it is much easier to fix than a BMW motorcycle which has much more automatic stuff on it and parts for a KLR 650 are easier to come by especially in Asia and Africa than a BMW motorcycle if you need to find them. Though I never did my round the world trek (which my wife is very happy I didn't) I have had a lot of fun riding my motorcycle around Northern California beaches and as far south as Big Sur and as far north as Riding around Mt. Shasta on dirt and rock roads and logging roads which is great fun. But, after 2015 whenever I dumped the bike and had to pick it up in the dirt for one reason or another I found (unless I wanted to put myself in a hospital or actually kill myself tearing out my hernia) that I needed help in picking up my bike after my burst appendix which also resulted eventually in the hernia I now have. I survived the burst appendix (unlike many people who die of sepsis) only to get a bad cough from something they put into your windpipe during the operation to prevent dying of reflux during your operation while you are unconscious. They fill your abdominal cavity with CO2 because it won't catch fire like oxygen can and it is a laparoscopic operation much like instruments they use for colonoscopies with cameras and lasers to repair you internally in a relatively non-invasive way. They punch about 6 holes into your abdomen to do this which when I coughed for a month afterwards because of anti-reflux balloons inserted into my windpipe caused one of the 6 or 7 holes to become a hernia. So, I survived the operation and burst appendix fine only to have to live with a hernia the rest of my life caused by an after effect of the operation.
