California is very very strict about all new structures being bolted in cement with metal bolts and other laws

In this way since at the very least the 1970s by being very strict about building codes of new housing and buildings we have had relatively few deaths in California ever since then except in older buildings who were not reinforced with rebar and fastening bolts to the cement foundations.

By Reinforcing cement with rebars of various lengths vertically and horizontally, even if the cement fails or breaks between the joints the building often will not collapse because the iron rebar will tend to hold it together. Whereas pure cement joints with no metal reinforcing will shatter in a big enough earthquake and those buildings will come tumbling down just like they did in Turkey and Syria in this terrible Earthquake.

So, if you study the loss of life in California even in larger quakes it is very small compared to many other places in the world. I think California and Japan have the best enforced building codes regarding earthquakes possibly than any other places on earth. I'm sure other places that get earthquakes will tend to increase their building codes using Iron Rebar rods and bolting buildings to cement foundations more all over the world after this horrific event in Turkey and Syria.

Because it is likely many more will either be found dead or will freeze to death from being in tents in the snow outside before all this is over there in Turkey and Syria.
