progressive corrective lenses and depth perception

I didn't have to wear glasses even for reading until I was in my late 40s or after. By about age 60 or 65 I got progressive glasses for driving (even though it wasn't legally required). Why?

Because I found it easier to read signs on the freeway and see children and animals and people on the sides of the roads soon enough to avoid them. So, though legally you might barely see anyone at the side of the road and not be able to read any signs and still be a legal driver I prefer to be safe and to keep people and animals safe when I drive a car or truck. But that's just me.

However, as I get older progressive lenses even though they are okay for driving they are deadly at times when you are walking. Why? Because especially as you age if you are wearing progressives your depth perception with these glasses can get worse and worse. The single most dangerous time is walking down stairs.

For me still, I almost always take off my glasses because my perception is better and I'm less likely to fall if I completely take the glasses off. Or if I'm in a rush and going down the stairs fast for some reason I will always (if I don't take my glasses off) hold a railing.

For many of you this might be obvious. For others of you I'm saving your lives by telling you all this.

It's sort of like when I used to wear socks in the house and had to stop because I almost died on just socks on carpeted stairways to the garage from the kitchen. If I hadn't been able to grab the rail a couple of these times I wouldn't be with you today right now. As it was I slammed into the garage fire door at the base of the stairs and could barely walk for a week.

So, I guess what I'm saying is: "NO matter how co-ordinated and amazing you were as a younger person if you wear progressives later in life or socks down your carpeted stairways (to the garage) in my case you just might not survive it or have broken limbs. So, be careful.

So, as you age you have to compensate before you die  or else you are soon gone before your time.

Good Luck.
