As long as you aren't stopped by the Cave Fire Cleanup 101 might work heading north

If you are heading north from Say Los Angeles or San Diego to Oregon or Washington or Canada areas the best way north at present appears to be 101 along the coast where it stays a little warmer because of the pacific Ocean. I cannot guarantee 101 will stay open either so here is what Caltrans has to say at present. Because I-5 is now closed 25 miles south of Bakersfield and from Redding to at least Dunsmuir at present (however I would keep checking because it is likely that it will open northbound from Redding to Dunsmuir and points north by Noon to 3 or so before it might close up again this evening. So, you might make it through in a 3 or 4 hour window if it reopens northbound up from Redding.
