The problem appears to be that women are not fully awake often in the morning after taking the sleeping pill Ambien the night before. Then they get in their car on the Freeway or something like that and wind up in serious car accidents. The solution the government says is to reduce the dose for women by 1/2. The drug Zolphidem which is an active ingredient in Ambien has an extended release formula. So, the first problem is women's body weight is much less than men and this extended release formula often is still extending its release when women get on the road to their jobs or shopping or taking the kids to school in the morning and interferes with wakefulness and concentration enough to drive safely without having an accident.

I've never taken sleeping pills because I chose to live and to have a life full of exercise and good healthy food and to logically reduce my stress levels whenever possible. The only time when I didn't sleep well was the 5 years after my last divorce in 1994 but then again the first month I didn't eat either so that was a part of it. Whenever possible eating really healthy food and increasing exercise that is fun to do so you actually want to can reduce sleeping problems. Another way is to get a job that wears you out every day so you just fall into bed at night sort of comatose from the day. Also, I have noticed that women after they have children become very light sleepers. Part of the reason for this is just to keep their children alive genetically for thousands of years. So often before 9 to 5 jobs for women they sometimes could make up sleep during the day. But for women who try to have kids and then work often there might be no solution they feel but taking something like Ambien. But, to me sleeping pills in general are not a real solution. My reasoning is this. One's tolerance to ANY sleeping pill grows and grows as someone takes it. Then because the body has adapted one CANNOT ever go to sleep without a sleeping pill of some kind. So, this becomes a vicious cycle that just gets worse and worse until people wind up in accidents from taking too much Ambien or something like that.
