Solar Powered Car of the Future?

I heard about this car a few years ago from Hungary. The idea of putting solar panels built into the roof I think is a great idea that we will see more and more of over time as solar cells get more efficient. I expect to see the entire upward surface of cars becoming solar cells in the future, possible even including the sides of the car as well. With good batteries and literally almost every car generating electricity whenever it is driven or parked in the sun it would be theoretically possible for almost anyone with such a car to sell the excess electricity back into a grid and not only power their vehicle but also their home with the electricity generated in this way.

Introduction: Reducing vehicle weight can lower energy consumption; however, it also leads to safety decline. In this case, hybrid car might be the best choice for car owners nowadays. Antro Electric Car Solo, developed by a Hungarian company, Antro, is a hybrid car with Solar Energy.

Nowadays, solo-electric car repeatedly appears in newspaper, which reflects the trend that green transportations are becoming more and more popular. Nevertheless, many people design green transportations and new models appear on Trade Shows, while few of them are put into production. That’s because both solar engine capacity and battery storage endurance are far from being equal to that of fuel-powered small cars. What’s more, cost of solo-electric car is much higher than fuel-powered ones.
Antro Electric Car Solo, with its unique panoramic sunroof power system, seems to only be seen in the sci-fi movies. This car can be powered in three ways: solar energy, hybrid engine, muscle-power. The whole car roof is actually a solar Car Battery Charger. When the car runs slowly and steadily, it can cover 25km merely consuming solar energy. With the solar battery not working, this car can be powered by hybrid engine with petrol or ethanol. In this case, the fuel consumption per one hundred kilometer is 1.5L to 2.0L and the top speed may reach 140km/h. Muscle-power doesn’t mean that one should move the pedal in front of the car to power it. Instead, one should pedal to propel the generator so that the car can maintain the motor-driven mode.
Apart from impressive fuel efficiency, this car also features its unique carbon fiber frame, and LED Headlights can be added to make it a soup-up model. The car weights 270kg but can take 300kg load. Antro designs a fuel-efficient three seater where the driver is flanked on either side by a passenger. That design is the same as McLaren F1. Antro is also trying to link two Antro Solo together to form a six-seater, Antro Duo.
If Mayan prophecy(2012 is the end of the world) doesn’t come true, Antro Solo is to be produced massively in 2012 and the price would be 12,000EURO(around 130,000RMB). By that time, the safety performance would be well-developed.

By the way, in case it wasn't made clear to you, the pedals are for generating electricity rather than pedaling like a mechanical bicycle. So, when you pedal you generate the electricity to make the electric motor run which likely is much more efficient than a bicycle for a variety of reasons. This combined with the Solar Charge allows the vehicle to operate very efficiently. Also, it appears to also have a small gasoline engine if you get tired pedaling to generate electricity so the gasoline engine will also generate electricity for you if you wish to run the car. I think you will see a lot more vehicles like this in Europe because often the price of gas there is about $10 a gallon and has been for some time. I don't know what people would do here if the gas was that high in the U.S. But if it were $10 a gallon here that likely would mean it would be $15 to $20 a gallon in Europe.
