My wife didn't know how long to microwave a yam? I said "when you get it right would you tell me too. " She said "yes". Then I said, "I'm going to pull out my Ipad and find out right now. Then I did and 4 to 5 minutes was what I got. She said, "I'm going to cut off the peels and then dice them because I want to mash them when they are done." So, we weren't sure what that would do to the 4 or 5 minutes.

Over time I've found that if I want a Baked Potato and it is middle to big sized usually I do about 8 minutes for a baked potato. But don't forget to punch holes in the skin or it will explode. The same for baking a potato in the oven. I find 8 minutes is much less painless than 1/2 hour to 45 minutes in the oven. However, baking enough for my whole family often took about 1 hour in the oven for enough for the 4 of us when I was growing up. Also, if you are going to eat the peelings it is better if it is an organic potato because potatoes, carrots and apples all take insecticides and herbicides into their meat beyond their skin but also directly into their skins. So organic is sort of necessary if you have the money for these three things. Also, the most important thing to eat is the skin on a baked potato. When prisoners were only fed mashed potatoes they died eventually in Ireland. But if they got the skins they were okay because you can survive just on baked potatoes as long as you eat the skins too.
