Though this sounds strange it could happen. Because the people sanctions will tend to hurt the most is Russian, European, English, American , Canadian and other democratic based capitalists. So, those that would foster a continuation of democracy in Russia would be the most hurt (capital and power wise) by these sanctions. So, those people that are Soviet Leaning might take advantage of the loss of power of democratic capitalists to reinstate a Soviet Communistic Russia into place once again.
IF you look historically back at Hitler for example, one of the reasons he came to power was that it took a wheelbarrow then of German Marks to buy a loaf of Bread. So, he promised "A chicken in every pot and a Volkswagon in every garage". That was one of his political slogans. And we all know what a mess happened after that.
Understanding that Putin feels that the end of the Soviet Union was "The biggest tragedy in the 20th century" you also know his friends might feel this way too. So, maybe invading Ukraine was a way to rid himself of Russian democratic Capitalists so he could renew a Communist Totalitarian state and increase the Russian Empire to it's status before 1990.
