This is the story of a guy from Indiana and a girl from New Zealand who barely survived the Earthquake and tsunami in Japan in 2011.
However, it made me think a lot about how many people who graduate college here in the U.S. and then can't get a job and go and teach English in a foreign country as a result. I'm hearing that Japan is a little expensive to do this (you need more capital up front to get situated). South Korea (if you work for the local public school system) is good because you can depend upon getting paid whereas if you work for private schools or as a tutor in South Korea or any country there is less chance you will be regularly paid. So, working at public school run by the governments often gives you more benefits of all kinds even though you likely won't get as many days off as you might here in the U.S. at a similar job. Also, teaching English in South Korea, Japan, Thailand, China or wherever in the Asian area you are going to be more in demand likely than if you go to Europe or some place like that. (Unless you actually have a teaching credential too or a CBEST. With a CBEST you are then qualified to teach in California at an elementary or higher level depending upon your score. Public schools in California often hire CBEST people (who also have a college degree) especially for substitute teachers and for difficult areas to place teachers in because of danger (like Oakland and east Los Angeles).

However, you might want to volunteer in a public school as a teacher and definitely take a TOEFL online or in person course somewhere so you are more desirable and have more training to teach people English when you can't speak their language.
