I haven't seen this movie but I have seen the kind of thing going on in college classrooms in college myself. It is not usually as direct as the plot of this movie. It is usually more subtle than that.
Can someone go to a public college and still believe in God? Of course. However, people who are not strong in whatever their beliefs when going to a public college are surely going to be tested. But, maybe that's a good thing.
My beliefs have gone through many changes since I first went to college and met all the people I have in my life. However, what has not changed is my personal experience with God and the Universe. I no longer see God as a white man in a white robe with white hair and blue eyes like when I was young. I see God as the all the intelligence and compassion in the universe in all time and space including myself and you. So, this is my experience. In the end your personal experience of the universe and God is what is important and not what one single other person or being in the universe thinks.
It really doesn't matter what other people think in the end. It matters what you think and experience in the end. Otherwise, you will just be another dead person who listened to people that confused you and you have to be stronger than that.
