reprint of "A Go anywhere motorcycle"

A Go Anywhere motorcycle

When I originally wrote the above article it was 2009 and I was just taking the motorcycle course in California to add the motorcycle driver's license to my regular California driver's license.

Since then, I realized that a bigger person (I'm 6 foot 5 inches tall might be better off on a BMW or a Husqvarna motorcycle or other European motorcycle because they are designed for taller bigger men just like Mercedes Cars are designed for men up to 6 foot 6 or more to ride in too. I realized that parts of my KLR 650 made by Kawasaki are really made for a rider about 170 pounds. Though I have kept this bike because I've gotten attached to it I still haven't reinforced the front springs or forks for someone my size like I was recommended to do mainly because I'm not going off road that much and I'm not doing jumps on it because I'm in my mid 60s. So, mostly I'm using it to ride along the ocean or I trailer it summers some times to ride around Mt. Shasta on some of the dirt roads there. I used to ride these roads in the 1970s and early 1980s on my 1974 Honda XL 250 which I really loved then and I owned it until 1989 after buying it used in 1975.

I miss kick starters on motorcycles more than anything else. It always seemed like a good idea in emergencies at the very least to have a kick starter. Because often transmissions on bikes don't like to be thrown into 2nd gear while pushing them if the battery is dead to start them in an emergency these days like we used to in the past when everything else failed.

note:
If I remember correctly when I was 15 1/2 in 1963 you could drive any motorcycle big or small without a helmet and without any training and without a special license(just a learner's permit) and most people didn't have insurance then, only richer people who could afford it.
