US alert over slow-moving landslide

US alert over slow-moving landslide

A slow-moving landslide split a house into two in Jackson, Wyoming (Tributary Environmental/AP)

A slow-moving landslide in the Wyoming resort town of Jackson has suddenly sped up, splitting a house into two and threatening to destroy more homes and businesses.

A geologist said it was unlikely the 100-foot-high hillside will collapse all at once but it could start falling in large pieces.
Jackson officials have stopped trying to stabilise the hill for safety reasons.
The movement has sped up from an inch a day to a foot a day.
New movement overnight bulged a road and a car park. Rocks and dirt are crumbling off the hill and the shifting earth has pushed a small utilities building 15 feet.
Four houses and two apartment buildings are under an evacuation order. Four businesses are also at risk.
