The best way that I can describe this is that ISIS is a product of the "New Cold War" between the U.S. and Russia. China is a passive ally of Russia and likely will fight maybe both the winner and the loser of this Cold War.
But ISIS is caused primarily by Russia's stance regarding Assad. If you think about the 9 million displaced Sunni Syrians, 2 million who have left Syria likely never to return at this point you begin to get just how this happened.
I think ISIS is just Sunnis fed up with Russia and Iran basically. The U.S. is not the direct enemy of ISIS even though there is a lot of rhetoric around this. The primary enemy of ISIS is Shia Muslims at this point because it will be hard for them to strike Russia which is where they would like to strike at the cause of Assad. They would also like to end Iran and to drive all Shia Muslims extinct.
So, if we in the U.S. understand what is the driving force it is anger at Assad and Shias in general that causes thousands to join ISIS. They are fed up with Assad, Iran and Russia's stance against Sunnis.
We are not their primary target. ISIS isn't stupid just really pissed off at what has happened in Syria to Sunnis.
To the best of my ability I write about my experience of the Universe Past, Present and Future
