Kindness towards oneself and others is a necessary part of long term survival. Some people might get away with being all gruff and angry a lot of the time. But, usually when you direct this at others people will redirect it back at you too and sometimes it might get violent. So, kindness towards oneself and others is always the best policy for the long run.
But, it doesn't mean "Be Stupid!" It means be practical so you can survive any situation you find yourself in.
But, whenever possible develop compassion towards yourself and others because this is always the key to a long lifetime wherever you are on earth.
A part of this is try to associate with people also that believe in compassion towards themselves and others too. This way it is much easier to live the new lifestyle you are choosing to live.
The Tibetans have a saying about all this: "Friends become enemies and enemies become friends through time. Because of this it is in one's long term best interests to always be kind to all beings."
To the best of my ability I write about my experience of the Universe Past, Present and Future
