This might just be a part of the Summer Monsoon season of the deserts when they get most of their rain but as I watch the radar right now the storms (look like thunder storms) are going east mostly from the Rockies and west from the Rockies. So, just about the middle of Colorado and New Mexico is the dividing point sending storms east and west.
What is hard to tell from the present radar maps of the U.S. is whether these storms came from the north or the south. But, if I guessed most would come from the south off the Pacific Ocean. (But I suppose some of them could have originated in Alaska or Canada too.)
Even where I live in California we had about 3 hours of drizzle here as well. All rain is welcome about now in California because it might keep some of the plants and trees alive another day.
The other fear of Californians is that this drought might turn more of California into a desert.
I'm not sure how many people around the world know that Palm Springs is a part of a desert area which extends from there all the way into Arizona and New Mexico.
It's also interesting to cross over into Arizona at one of the points where you take a bridge over the Colorado River from California into Arizona.
