A four-story factory building collapsed in Lahore, Pakistan Wednesday, killing at least 10 people and leaving "scores" trapped beneath rubble, officials have announced.
The collapse occurred towards the end of the work day during the evening, when hundreds of people were still inside the building, according to The Independent.
Kashif Nazir, a rescue worker at the scene, noted that the rescue team has been digging for survivors using construction equipment and has recovered 35 people thus far, many of whom sustained minor injuries.
The factory, located in the Sundar Industrial Estate south of the city, manufactured shopping bags. While it's unclear what caused the collapse, construction work has been going on at the building, reported Reuters. Two floors were reportedly operational while a third was being built.
Though officials said that the death toll stood at 10, several Pakistani news outlets said that it was 11, and the count is expected to rise.
The incident comes over a week after a magnitude-7.5 earthquake hit Pakistan and northern Afghanistan, killing 273 and damaging about 75,000 homes across the country.
