Vipassana, which means to see things as they really are, is one of India's most ancient techniques of meditation. It was taught in India more than 2500 years ago
My older daughter has done the 10 day vipassana meditation twice now and considers it to be a very valuable thing to do. For example, you don't talk, use a phone, watch TV, use the Internet or any media or any talking for 10 days. The purpose of this is to be present in the now rather than in a fictitious place in the past or future. By being present in the moment one can better live ones life and not just be lost in media or the future or the past. The whole point is to be so present that you can better help yourself and others in your life to succeed at whatever you find useful to do in your life.
Note: However, I think each person has to know themselves enough to know whether this would be helpful to them or not. For example, I did a vision quest which is no water and no food for 4 days (96 hours) at the edge of a river in a bear wallow in 1983 in the summer. This was good for me. However, I likely wouldn't want to have to be quiet around a whole bunch of people doing this for 10 days.
Because I know myself, I kind of know what would be helpful to me personally, given my own personality.
However, if you do one of these and don't know for sure what kind of things you want or need I'm sure you are going to find out really fast after even 1 or 2 days of a Vipassana meditation without talking.
