The policies of the U.S. must be viewed with this in mind. So, the U.S. is the most worried about possible Iranian Nukes. That Iran will eventually have nuclear weapons is a no-brainer I believe at this point. The only thing is "When". That's it.
So, it is better that the U.S. can continue to have a dialog with Iran for when that time comes it appears. For this reason it is likely that the U.S. has decided it would rather have Assad as leader in Syria than ISIS (which appears to be the actual choice unfortunately)
So, what does this mean for Sunni Nations?
I'm not sure. I don't think the U.S. is backing off alliances with the Sunni nations either. It is mostly about trying to be friends with as many as possible to avoid future nuclear war. The U.S. also could be positioning itself as a future negotiator between Shiites and Sunnis in both the near and Far Future.
This to me is what presently appears to be going on.
To the best of my ability I write about my experience of the Universe Past, Present and Future
