Trump said, 90 cents a gallon? Wasn't that 1952?

He said this today in his daily coronavirus press conference.

But, in 1952 I cannot remember what it was then because I was 4 years old and couldn't read yet but I remember 1969 and if I went to the Mohawk station in San Pedro then with my friend before we drove to mt. Shasta(San Pedro is in Los Angeles County in between Palos Verdes and Long Beach I believe). If we filled up it was 17 cents a gallon for regular then in 1969 which was the cheapest station we could find then as college students. He had a 1959 oval window 36 horse power VW Bug which could get 30 to 40 miles per gallon then on the road so you likely could drive to mt. Shasta then on maybe 2 to 3 dollars worth of gas or less

Then starting in 1973 with the Arab Oil embargo and Opec gasoline went up first to around 25 to 30 Cents a gallon and by the late 1970s it was 85 to 90 cents a gallon. However, you could still buy gas for 1.11 cents a gallon for regular throughout the 1980s until maybe 1990 in Redding heading south to San Francisco Area which we did then about every month or two to visit friends and relatives there.

So, 1969 17cents a gallon for regular. 1973 25 to 50 cents a gallon for regular. 1978 to 1980 85 to a dollar a gallon for regular.

However, I live in California and we use gas taxes charge on every gallon of gas to repair our roads too so often our gas even then was about 30 cents  then to now up to 1 dollar more than most other places per gallon.

Mt. Shasta from Los Angeles is approximately 606 miles if you go up Interstate 5 most of the way.

So at 30 miles per gallon you need 20 gallons to get to Mt. Shasta. You could drive to mt. Shasta in 1969 for $3.40  1 way. So, if you could buy gas for 17 cents a gallon in Shasta or Redding (which is unlikely) you could return for around $3.40 to Los Angeles too. But, a more reasonable rate likely would be you could return to Los Angeles for 5 dollars in Gas then.

So, round trip for college students camping out there for free on the mountain was $8.40 for this trip.
So, if we brought our own food we could drive there and back for $8.40
