River fire grows from 10,000 plus acres to 33,000 plus acres and smoke is unbearable now in many areas of the State

Latest update: The Monterey County Sheriff's Office has issued an Evacuation Order for all areas south of Corral de Tierra Road and Underwood Road extending south to Tassajara Rd, not to include Corral de Tierra Road and Underwood Road.

The River Fire, burning south of Salinas, has grown to 33,653 acres Thursday morning and was 7% contained. According to the Monterey County Sheriff, more than 5,000 people have been evacuated.
According to Cal Fire, the fire started at 3 a.m. Sunday morning due to lightning in the area of Pine Canyon Road and River Road.
Four firefighters suffered heat-related injuries while fighting the fire, reported Cal Fire. Full containment is expected by August 30.

Evacuations

Mandatory evacuations were issued for the following locations:
  • Pine Canyon Rd, Parker Rd, Laurel Ln, and Trimble Hill Ln
  • West of River Rd from Parker Rd, South to Limekiln Rd to include Limekiln Rd
  • Southwest of Parker Rd, northwest of Corral De Cielo Rd, and Rana Creek
  • Southwest of the intersection Chualar River Rd, and River Rd,
  • Northwest of Limekiln Rd/Creek
  • West of river Road from Limekiln Rd to Gonzales River Road
  • All areas south of Highway 68, east of San Benancio Rd to include San Benancio Rd south to Harper Canyon Rd
  • Harper Canyon area, all areas within north of San Benancio Rd, west of Troy Ln, southeast of Harper Canyon Rd, to include Harper Canyon Road, Weather Rock Way, and Rimrock Canyon Rd
  • South of River Rd from Tara Dr to Pine Canyon Rd to include all roads off of Las Palmas Pkwy, Ranchito Dr, Indian Springs Rd, Berry Dr, Enos Dr, Redding Dr, and Belmont Circle Southeast of the intersection of Chualar River Rd and River Rd, northwest of Limekiln
  • Harper Canyon Area, all areas north of San Benancio Rd, west of Troy Ln, southeast of Harper Canyon Rd, to include Harper Canyon Rd, Weather Rock Way, and Rimrock Canyon Rd
  • All areas south within the intersection of Hwy 68 and River Road to Tara Drive and Hwy 68 south to San Benancio Road, including the Los Palmas 1 and 117 Drive Communities. This order does not include the Toro Regional Main Park area.
  • West of River Road extending west to Carmel Valley Road. West of River Road south from Gonzales River Road to Puma Road. East of Carmel Valley Road from south of Tassajara Road to Finch Creek.
  • South of Corral de Tierra Road and Underwood Road extending south to Tassajara Rd, not to include Corral de Tierra Road and Underwood Road.
    An evacuation advisory remains for the following:
    • Indian Canyon, Mt. Toro Access Rd and San Benancio Rd from Troy Ln. to Corral de Tierra, including Corral del Cielo Rd, Lucie Ln, and Covie Ln
    • Areas North of Highway 68 from Portola Drive and Veronica Drive/Estoque Place east, to include all roads off of Portola Drive to Creekside Court
    • West of River Rd extending west to Carmel Valley Rd
    • West of River Rd south from Gonzales River Rd to Puma Rd
    • All areas east of Carmel Valley Road extending south from finch Creek to Arroyo Seco Rd. All areas west of River Road and For Romie Road and Arroyo Seco Road extending South to Elm Avenue and Arroyo Seco Rd.
      (Red are mandatory evacuation zones, yellow are areas under an evacuation warning)
      An estimated 2,750 structures are threatened. Cal Fire reported Monday evening that six structures had been destroyed and two had been damaged.

      Evacuation Center

      Monterey County, in collaboration with the American Red Cross, is offering both an evacuation center and evacuation shelter to meet the needs of fire evacuees.
      An evacuation shelter is open at Carmel Middle School, 4380 Carmel Valley Road. The shelter will be open 24 hours, has the capacity to provide meals and sleeping accommodations for up to 20 people and can be expanded as needed.
      An evacuation center is located at Weather Tech Raceway Laguna Seca on Highway 68.
      The center is open 8 am to 8 pm and offers evacuees water, snacks and a rest stop to make further plans or find out about assistance offered by the American Red Cross.
      Animals can be evacuated to the SPCA Monterey County. As of Monday evening, they were housing 11 dogs, 13 cats, and three birds. Call the SPCA at 831-264-5455 if you need assistance.

      Road Closures

      River Road is closed between Pine Canyon Road and Parker Road.
      According to Caltrans, Highway 101 and Highway 68 remain open in the area but they advise drivers to use caution due to a change in traffic and the presence of emergency vehicles.
      The California Highway Patrol had closed River Road from SR-68 to Chualar but reopened it Monday morning.
      Toro Park is closed to the public as Cal Fire uses it as a staging area.

      Cancelled School

      • Carmel Unified School District: All in-person and virtual activities and programs cancelled for Wednesday, August 19 through Friday, August 21.
      • Early Learning Program Sites (all 24 centers) for the Monterey County Office of Education Early Learning Program will be closed on Thursday, August 20 and Friday, August 21 due to poor air quality in the region.
      • Monterey Peninsula Unified School District: Marina Child Development Center and Seaside Child Development Center will be closed on Thursday, August 20 and Friday, August 21.
      • Salinas Union High School District: Due to evacuations in the South Salinas area caused by the River Fire, all classes are cancelled for Salinas High School and Washington Middle School on August 20 and 21. Classes are anticipated to resume on Monday, August 24, however, if the fires continue to pose threats in the community, the community will be informed of any changes.
      • Spreckels Union School District: The first day of school (originally scheduled for Wednesday, August 19) has been postponed to Monday, August 24.
      • Washington Union School District: All in-person and virtual activities and programs cancelled for Monday, August 17 through Friday, August 21. Updates will be provided for next week at a later time.
