Potential for extreme fire behavior in Siskiyou and Trinity counties
Support local journalism
With two large wildfires burning in California’s Siskiyou Mountains, a warning has been issued for dry and gusty weather.
A red-flag warning issued by the National Weather Service for Siskiyou County runs from 2 p.m. to 10 p.m. Wednesday, Aug. 4.
“Strong, gusty wind with low relative humidity and critically dry vegetation will greatly increase the spread potential of any new and existing fires,” it says.
Of the more than 20 wildfires ignited by a July 29 lightning storm, several have become large enough to prompt evacuations in Trinity and Siskiyou counties. They are marked on the map above with red icons.
McFarland
• Burned: 20,005 acres (31 square miles), 5% containment, on the morning of Aug. 4. The previous day’s report from Forest Service fire managers said that, given the dry, hot weather and forecast winds, “this fire has the potential to continue doubling daily.”
• Evacuation order: The community of Wildwood, including 10 miles of Wildwood Road north of Highway 36. The evacuation center is Solid Rock Church, at Tule Creek Road and Highway 3 in Hayfork.
• Warnings: Post Mountain, Trinity Pines, Shields Road, White Rock Road, Harrison Gulch between Highway 36 and Deer Lick Springs Road.
• Highway closure: Highway 36 is closed between Highway 3 and White Rock Road, the California Department of Transportation said.
Monument
• Burned: Estimated size 15,000 acres (23 square miles) with no containment on the morning of Aug. 4. It’s in steep, difficult terrain along the Trinity River, and four spot fires have ignited on the north side of the river, the Forest Service said.
• Evacuation order: The Highway 299 communities of Del Loma, Big Bar and Cedar Flat. Evacuation centers are First Baptist Church in Weaverville and the VFW Hall at 20 Kimtu Road in Willow Creek.
• Warnings: Burnt Ranch, Big Flat.
• Highway closure: Highway 299 is closed between Cedar Flat and Big Flat.
River Complex (including Haypress and Summer)
• Burned: Haypress is 6,000 acres and Summer about 2,500 acres.
• Evacuation order: Taylor Creek Road area, Cecilville, Caribou Road. Temporary evacuation point is Etna Fire Hall, 400 Main St., Etna.
• Warnings: Forks of Salmon, Sawyers Bar, Godfried, Blue Ridge, Black Bear, Uncle Sam Mine and Eddy Gulch Road.
Antelope
• Burned: 2,700 acres in high desert near the area of the Tennant Fire, which started on June 28 and was contained at 10,000 acres.
• Evacuation orders: Antelope Creek, Tennant and Bray. The temporary evacuation point is the Dorris City Hall.
The evacuation order areas are marked in yellow on the map above. For updates, check the sheriff’s Facebook pages for Trinity County and Siskiyou County, or see the official Siskiyou map below.
