For example, a Tibetan Lama might teach a student when the master is older. Then that master passes on and then when the Master is reborn he becomes the student of his previous student who then becomes a master and then this cycle often repeats itself over and over.
Are the Student and the master aware of what is happening? Some of the time depending upon the development lifetime after lifetime of that particular Tulku which is a realized "Living Buddha" who might be fully aware of who he or she is and always has been from babyhood sort of like depicted in "The Golden Child" with Eddie Murphy. So, even though most of this is "Hollywooded to the max" in the movie there are elements of truth to this movie in that there are Living Buddhas who know who they are and always have been even sometimes when they are babies.
