Because they are ordered to advance. If they retreat Russian officers will shoot Russian soldiers. So, if they want to live they surrender to Ukrainian soldiers. Otherwise, they are going to die either way. The Russian soldiers don't understand why they are even there in Ukraine. Since they are hearing that retreating soldiers are shot they have to choose either to fight or surrender. Crazy times for Russia and the world!
It was like this in World war II for Russian Soldiers too. They would send their soldiers up against German machine gun nests as cannon fodder. If they retreated their officers would shoot them then too. This is standard procedure historically for Russian soldiers.
This is why The American Army wins wars because our soldiers are told the truth and we actually have a useful Chain of command structure. This is not true of the Russian Army (at least for now). And it's also true that Russian Draftees have been sent into battle not even being told that they were going to fight that had never been trained to even shoot weapons.
This isn't true of all soldiers but of many Russian draftees. So, first they aren't told they will be fighting and they haven't been trained to fight if they are young (18 to 20) so they know nothing about fighting and are sent in as cannon fodder. If they somehow survive this maybe they learn enough to survive and become soldiers. Otherwise they die or surrender. These are the only two choices they have.
So, this situation is more horrific than it was for American Draftees during the Viet Nam and Korean Wars.
This is something to think about for everyone on earth.
