Prohibition was stopped in 1933 because so many went blind and died from drinking denatured alcohol

Men used to killing the pain and numbing themselves after a really hard days work in the factory or in construction couldn't afford speakeasy alcohol provided by bootleggers. So, they bought denatured alcohol and instead and this made blind and  killed thousands of people between 1919 and 1933. Congress finally realized their mistake and made alcohol legal again in all the states (likely 48 states then).

Alcohol sort of went through a similar change at this time sort of like marijuana has gone through in many states since the 1960s. When it was made illegal criminals still made and sold it so decriminalizing it actually saved lives. The same has been true of marijuana made legal has saved thousands of lives from beheading and shooting and raping by cartels especially along the U.S. Mexico borders.

People found out that regulating both and taxing both saved thousands and thousands of lives so this was a better long term outcome for both things for society in general.

However, for individuals in specific who have no self discipline this is an entirely different question and the results are often also fatal in one way or another.
