It is a way to terrorize into submission Ukraine. But, if this works in Ukraine he will then bomb or cruise missile other nuclear power plants throughout Europe I believe. It is a way (without using nuclear weapons) to terrorize the whole world in various ways.
This is not about money from Putin's point of view. This is about revenge for what happened to the Soviet Union. So, whatever he can do to destroy Europe and the U.S. he is going to do while he is still alive and in power.
Thinking of Putin like being an Autocrat ISIS terrorist (even though Putin is against ISIS terrorists) might be useful at this point. Because he is breaking all the rules and laws of warfare so far by pounding civilians and killing them all over Ukraine and terrorizing them with cluster bombs and dumb bombs and missiles.
As the Ukrainian government has to divert more energy to rescuing Ukrainian citizens from no food, no water, while being mortared and bombed without letup this causes some Ukrainian soldiers to rescue their families rather than fight the Russian Soldiers. This is especially true of volunteer fighters with Kalashnikov automatic rifles who would run to save mothers, fathers, sisters, brothers and wives instead of fighting Russians so they don't all die.
So, creating radiation leaks in various Ukrainian nuclear power plants would be a way that more Ukrainians would need to be rescued so they wouldn't die horribly by radiation.
The real problem with this for the world is that if he is successful doing this in Ukraine (even if no one can live there anymore because of radiation) he might do this throughout Europe and the U.S. as well in time.
The problem is he could do this without using nuclear weapons and clear most of Europe and all people away from everything east of the Mississippi River because of where nuclear power plants are located in the U.S. and Europe.
I think Germany was very wise to start closing all it's nuclear power plants after what happened at Fukushima in 2011 because of this.
