Have you ever smelled the smell of desert rain?

It's very special indeed because it rains so seldom in the desert. My father and I built a house on the high Desert above Yucca Valley out near Old Woman Springs on weekends from 1968 until my father and mother retired there in 1980  and I have experienced this desert rain many times and it is very different than rain anywhere else. Then if you are still there a few days or weeks later no matter what time of year it is the desert flowers start blooming because there are seeds in the ground that wait all year for this. And the native plants like Cholla Cactuses turn green some too and the Joshua Trees are amazing too and other plants like Barrel Cactuses sometimes bloom too within a few days or weeks also.

The most likely time for this kind of rain is often from June on until fall because of Monsoon rains that come up from Mexico off the Pacific or Atlantic Oceans through the Gulf of Mexico or the Gulf of California where Baja California is in Mexico. I've noticed that there seem to be more monsoon rains the last few years for some reason. Maybe it's the heat evaporating the oceans more now maybe.

This is what blooming barrel cactuses can look like:
