I write about electric vehicles mostly to make people more aware of all the practical issues that are often overlooked by our government and car salesmen to owner's detriment

The point is that electric vehicles aren't really that useful to you or to the ecology unless they are completely supplied by electricity from renewables and not natural gas or coal. In California it is around 50 percent natural gas producing electricity with the rest being renewables like solar, wind or geothermal?

So, owning an electrical vehicle is 50% still harming the weather here in California. And when you get rid of your rechargeable batteries it also harms the earth and the water tables as the poisons from your rechargeable batteries leaches into the soil and ground water wherever they are put (like in a land fill?)

So, EV rechargeable batteries are sort of like Nuclear Waste in this respect. There is NO SAFE PLACE TO PUT THEM. However, one option might be to recycle them and to have them rebuilt and reused?
