Once again, the satellites would still be there, the EMP melts the electronics for an area the size of the Continental U.S. (lower 48 states).

The problem on some levels is only theoretical simply because "who would be crazy enough to use a thermonuclear device in Space like this? The answer is presently easy: Putin. But, I think Trump would also be someone crazy enough to do something like this against his perceived enemies too. We just haven't seen what a Trump as crazy as he presently is is capable of yet. Hopefully, he will never become president by any means elected or violent at this point.
And if he loses this time 2028 he will definitely be too old to run again.
My personal biggest concern would not be the satellites that died but stayed in space but rather the Atmosphere of earth itself and radiation raining down in various forms upon all life below?
Also, would this nuclear blast blow some of the atmosphere off of earth? No one knows because I don't think this kind of thing has ever been tested. So, imagine the concussion waves and what that would do as well as any EMP and what that would do.
When I wrote EMP I was writing about a government paper that was public Knowledge in the 1960s and 1970s regarding doing this as an act of war against another country or region. So, they figured then in the Government that a 100 megaton hydrogen Bomb would knock out permanently anything electrical in the U.S. that hasn't been Militarily specifically modified to survive nuclear blasts and EMPs.
I would think that 99% of the electrical things at least in the U.S. are not modified to withstand EMPS or nuclear blasts at this point. Also, the passenger jets likely would all crash with thousands of people dying as jets couldn't be flown with all electrical assists melted and gone.
