Structure and Design
- The Lodge: Built from bent saplings (often willow) lashed together into a low, domed framework about four to five feet high.
- The Covering: Covered with heavy blankets, animal hides, or tarps to seal in total darkness and intense heat.
The Ceremony
- The Stones:Often called "grandfathers," rocks are heated in an external fire until glowing hot, then carefully brought inside and placed in the center pit.
- The Steam: Water mixed with sweetgrass or sage is poured over the hot stones, creating a dark, highly intense, and humid environment.
- Rounds and Prayers: The ceremony is divided into distinct "rounds" of prayers, traditional songs, and drumming led by an elder or ceremonial leader.
- Symbolism: The enclosed, womb-like structure represents returning to the womb of Mother Earth for spiritual, emotional, and physical cleansing. Participants often emerge feeling a renewed bond, famously proclaiming phrases like "All my relations" (in Sioux/Lakota traditions) to signify collective unity.
Cultural Significance and Protocols
- Diversity of Tradition: Practices vary widely across different Indigenous nations and geographic regions (such as the Plains Inipi or the Aztec temazcal).
- Respect and Access: Because the sweat lodge is a deeply sacred religious rite, attending or visiting one requires an invitation, proper protocol, and profound respect for tribal customs. Many urban Indigenous health and cultural centers, such as the American Indian Health and Family Services, host community or elder lodges for native peoples.
