(CNN)The first novel coronavirus case was reported in New York Sunday while officials in Washington state confirmed the second US death from the outbreak.

The New York patient is a woman in her late 30s, who contracted the virus while traveling abroad in Iran and is currently isolated in her home, New York Gov. Andrew Cuomo said.

"The patient has respiratory symptoms, but is not in serious condition and has been in a controlled situation since arriving to New York," Cuomo's statement read.

The New York State Department of Health said the patient went to a hospital in Manhattan after contracting the virus.

Cuomo said approval for state testing was granted on Saturday and the positive test was confirmed by New York's Wadsworth Lab in Albany.

"There is no cause for surprise -- this was expected," Cuomo said. "As I said from the beginning, it was a matter of when, not if there would be a positive case of novel coronavirus in New York."

Cuomo added there's no reason for "undue anxiety."

"The general risk remains low in New York. We are diligently managing this situation and will continue to provide information as it becomes available," he said.

Disease detectives in New York have already identified close contacts of the patient, according to New York City Health Commissioner Oxiris Barbot.

"As we confront this emerging outbreak, we need to separate facts from fear, and guard against stigma and panic," Barbot said.

Coronavirus cases continue to rise in US

Officials in King County, Washington, confirmed the second US coronavirus death as a male patient in his 70s with underlying health conditions. He was hospitalized at Evergreen Health in Kirkland and died Saturday, according to a King County Public Health press release.

Vice President Mike Pence told CNN's Jake Tapper on Sunday that more US deaths were "possible."

"We could have more sad news," he said. "But the American people should know the risk for the average American remains low."

The New York case was one of several reported Sunday. Officials reported two new patients in Washington state, bringing the state's total number of cases to eight.

Washington state investigating possible coronavirus outbreak at a nursing facility

Two men in their 60s are presumptive positives for the virus, public health officials with Seattle and King County said in a news release, meaning tests in state or local laboratories came back positive but have yet to be confirmed by the CDC.

Both patients had underlying health conditions, officials said. One was hospitalized at Valley Medical Center in Renton and is in critical but stable condition, the news release said. The other is at Virginia Mason Medical Center in critical condition.

But those were just the latest developments in Washington state, where officials Saturday announced the first coronavirus death in the US and where authorities were investigating a nursing facility outside Seattle.

Of the 88,443 cases confirmed globally, at least 3,041 have been fatal — 2,912 of which were in China. The US has at least 77 confirmed cases of the virus, according to counts by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention and state and local health authorities.

Officials investigate Washington nursing facility

Among the US cases are several believed to have been spread person-to-person with unknown origins, including the patient in Washington state who died, according to Dr. Robert Redfield, director of the CDC.

The patient was a man in his 50s with underlying health conditions, according to Dr. Jeffrey Duchin, health officer for Seattle and King County, Washington.

Officials announced two cases linked to Life Care Center, a nursing facility in Kirkland, Washington, including a 40-year-old health care worker and a woman in her 70s. The health care worker is in satisfactory condition at a local hospital, and the woman in her 70s is hospitalized in serious condition.

But more than 50 residents and staff at the facility are experiencing symptoms and will be tested for coronavirus, Duchin told reporters Saturday.

"We're in the process of investigating this situation as an outbreak," he said.

"We take the event very seriously," a statement from the facility's executive director said, in part. Life Care Center is not allowing visits from families, volunteers or vendors, and admissions have been placed on hold for the time being, the statement said.

But residents and staff weren't the only ones impacted.

What we know about potential coronavirus vaccines and treatments

At least 25 firefighters and two police officers who responded to the Life Care Center have now been placed under quarantine "out of an abundance of caution," according to a statement from the City of Kirkland. Firefighters are either under quarantine at home or at a Kirkland fire station, the statement said.

There were also concerns that 16 nursing students and a faculty member from Lake Washington Institute of Technology were exposed to the virus after visiting the center late last week, the school said in a statement. The campus will be closed Monday and Tuesday to be cleaned and disinfected.

Five more cases identified in California

A total of five new presumptive positive cases of coronavirus were identified in California Sunday, according to health departments in three counties.

Two patients are health care workers from Alameda County and Solano County, according to a joint press release from two localities. Both are employees at NorthBay VacaValley Hospital in Vacaville, California, according to the release. Vacaville is about 34 miles southwest of Sacramento.

The two patients came into contact with a community-acquired case currently hospitalized at UC Davis Medical Center in Sacramento, the release said. The patients are currently in isolation at home.

These cases are pending confirmatory testing from the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, the release said.

The three other cases were identified in Santa Clara County, according to the county's health department. The total number of cases in the county is now seven, the release said.

One of the cases in Santa Clara is a woman with chronic health issues who is hospitalized, the release said. Officials have not said how this person contracted the virus.

The other two cases are a husband and wife, the release said. Both are hospitalized and the husband has chronic health conditions. Both recently traveled to Egypt, the release said.

The Rhode Island Department of Health announced the state's first presumptive positive case on Sunday morning. The patient was said to be in their 40s and had in mid-February traveled in Europe, including Italy, where there were 1,694 cases as of Sunday.

What symptoms to be on the lookout for and how to protect yourself from coronavirus

The Rhode Island patient is being treated at an undisclosed hospital, and officials are reaching out to people who has had direct contact with the individual, the state Department of Health said in a statement. The patient has had limited travel within the state and hasn't been to work since returning from Italy.

Among the US cases are 44 people who were aboard the Diamond Princess cruise ship, three people who were repatriated from China and 30 cases that were detected in the US.

At least 15 cases in the US are travel-related and at least 12 are linked to person-to-person spread, according to the CDC. Several are of unknown origin.

But New York University doctors and other experts say the US probably has more cases than identified officially. That's because of testing delays and the virus' ability to spread before an infected person shows any symptoms.

The New York Times reported Sunday the virus might have been in Washington state for weeks and up to 1,500 people might be infected there.

US expands travel restrictions

The vice president said Saturday the administration is expanding existing travel restrictions on Iran to include foreign nationals who had visited Iran in the last 14 days.

Trump says additional American coronavirus cases 'likely'

The US will also increase travel advisories for Italy and South Korea to Level 4 — the highest level — advising Americans not to travel to specific regions in those countries.

On Sunday, President Trump announced via Twitter new screening procedures for people arriving in the US if they are traveling from "high-risk countries."

Katie Miller, a spokeswoman for Vice President Pence, clarified to CNN what is covered under the screening measures Trump mentioned in his tweet:

"There is already screening for those coming into the United States for those who have been in China in the last 14 days. This will be expanded to Italy and South Korea. Additionally, we are currently working on exit screening from South Korea, Italy, and other European nations as needed," Miller said.

Raining this morning in Orange

I got up this morning to load my 4 wheel drive truck to head north once again and it started sprinking so I put a jacket on. It didn't rain enough for me to put a tarp over everything in the back of the truck mostly because I have a fold top on my truck bed that folds in 3 pieces so I can lock the gate which locks everything inside the bed of the truck. This isn't as pretty as the one piece truck bed covers but I find it much more utilitarian because you can fold up two pieces onto the third and then load in a refrigerator or motorcycle or whatever you need to carry much easier if you need to with a fold top on the bed of the truck.

We drove to the church in my Cousin's car and after that we drove north but was amazed at the route my cousin chose because I made it from Orange to Las Virgenes Canyon road that leads to Malibu where it crosses 101 in only one hour. I was pretty amazed to do this today. We went out Chapman to 55 freeway then the next exit is the 22 Freeway west until it intersected with the 405 and then the only traffic we hit was about from LAX to the crest of the coastal range just before you get on the 101 West towards Oxnard. So, to do that in one hour was pretty impressive to me because I grew up in Los Angeles area in Glendale, California which is in between Burbank and Hollywood and Eagle Rock and Pasadena and to the north Montrose and La Canada and La Crescenta. I lived in Glendale from 1956 until 1969 when I was 8 to 21 years old.
