The Greek Parliament, by an overwhelming vote of 205-3, voted to
again lift the immunity of the neo-Nazi Golden Dawn party MP and
spokesman Ilias Kasidiaris so that he can be prosecuted for assaulting
two female MP’s on a live TV show last year.
It was the second time his immunity has been lifted, the first so he could be tried in the case of an assault on a student in 2007, for which he was acquitted.
In that case the court found there was some doubt that he had participated and been in a getaway car that was rented in his name. This time, however, the assault was seen before witnesses in the studio and viewers.
It showed Kasidiaris throwing water in the face of a Leftist MP and then standing and swinging wildly, slapping Communist MP Liana Kanelli after the two disagreed over whether there were oil reserves south of Crete.
He was locked in a room by employees but battered it down and fled and hid until an arrest warrant expired. At the time, he had not been elected to the Parliament. Greek lawmakers have immunity from all crimes unless the protection is lifted by their colleagues, which is unusual, although they also removed immunity from New Democracy deputy Michalis Tamilos in connection to a case of unpaid contributions to social security fund IKA during his tenure as Mayor of Trikala.
