If you have ever studied psychology and you look at the life history of most terrorists, the conclusion you might come to is that either they were abused in one or multiple ways growing up or they are experiencing some version of Post Traumatic Stress Disorder. So, basically what creates a terrorist is dysfunction in their lives at one or all points.
However, this is not to lessen the value of their feelings. Everyone needs to have their feelings to be able to function at all. The question then becomes: "Are these feelings rational?" And this is where the world starts to break apart into different camps of thought. Because in the western world we tend to be "self disciplined" in the way we function. This comes from Chivalry and taking care of others and from our cultures of thousands of years. However, for example, most parts of the world are not self disciplined (at least in the way we are here in the U.S. and Europe). Instead, there is much more of a "group mentality". In "Group mentality" cultures women and children get raped and abused a lot more than in our "self disciplined" cultures. However, there are good things to be said about both types of cultures.
One of the experiences that was the hardest lesson for me to learn about "group mentality" was when I was in Bodhgaya and about 10,000 people were running for about 10 toilets. I was with my then 12 year old step daughter who had on only beach walkers or thongs. I looked up and here were 10,000 people running towards the 10 bathrooms and I was scared because that wasn't where I was going. So, the reason we survived this was that I am 6 foot 5 and very strong and I put out my elbow and stood there with my daughter the other side of me and I acted as a break in the flow of people. So, if they were going to knock us down by accident I was making sure they would be seriously injured doing it. Therefore we survived this melee of 10,000 people running for toilets. I just made sure the next time this happened I wasn't there with my daughter being caught unaware.
So, when there is more of a "group mentality" there is less rugged individualism and self discipline. In this climate all sorts of strange things can go on, especially with a mob mentality. So, when men (or women) who have been abused or who have ptsd for various reasons get together as terrorists all sorts of mayhem can ensue.
To the best of my ability I write about my experience of the Universe Past, Present and Future
