Effigies Of Blacks Lynched At UC Berkeley

According to a Reuters release, officials at the University of California, Berkeley, reported that life-sized effigies of what appeared to be lynching victims were reported hanging by nooses yesterday potentially related to the numerous protests over the shooting deaths of black men by police officers.

Spokesperson Claire Holmes said UCB police officers responded to a.m. reports of a pair of cardboard cut-out effigies in public areas on campus prior to a midday march and demonstration organized at the college in the Oakland area. A third effigy was hung before all would be taken down.
Holmes stated: “It has been unclear to us whether this was racially motivated or part of the protests across the country against police violence.” She also said the effigies were upsetting and the university would conduct an investigation. As this goes to press there are no suspects.
In Boston, New York, and Washington, D.C. reportedly thousands marched in peaceful protests of the shootings of black males by police in Cleveland, Missouri, New York and other unspecified locations. Grand jury decisions to not indict officers involved in the deaths of Eric Garner in New York and Michael Brown in Missouri have put a national spotlight on police treatment of minorities.
Pictures of effigies of a black man and woman can be viewed on Twitter. The female effigy had the name “Laura Nelson” on it. Nelson was hung in Oklahoma back in 1911. The phrase “I can’t breathe” is written across both. The phrase is said to be in reference to Garner’s words to police as they subdued him.
That single phrase has become a rallying cry in protests across the country. One anonymous male observer later commented: “In the Garner case no one ever mentions his antagonistic remarks before the incident.” He also asked: “How can people say the Garner incident was racially-motivated when the officer in charge was black?”

Protests also occurred in the cities of Seattle, Oakland and Los Angeles. According to an anonymous L.A. resident who witnessed in the Los Angeles protest: “(The) LAPD was extremely nice, and was there for crowd control. The protesters blocked traffic and were generally rude.”
Another nameless observer later noted: “The bottom line is none of these people were on the grand juries or savvy to all the evidence. Perhaps for future reference they should remember that acting like *ssholes and blocking traffic doesn’t win people over to your cause. “
When asked about the effigies he commented: “I’m not convinced that the college effigies were originally part of the protest either. For all we know they may originally have been hung because people are sick of protesters who ignore the facts but still go out and disrupt everything. Someone could have labeled them after the fact to re-purpose them.”
