Though this may be true to some degree Hezbollah which is fighting for Assad is funded by Iran and likely Assad himself to a greater or lesser degree is also funded by Iran. So, though Alawites don't want Iran to be ruling them, financially at least Assad has always been a puppet of Iran much like the government of Iraq since the Shiites took it over from Saddam Hussein.
The U.S. government might not want us to see things this way but this is the reality on the ground.
One of the reasons American soldiers didn't stay in Iraq is because Iran didn't want them there and so pressured Maliki to not grant them immunity from prosecution regarding Iraqi laws. The U.S. government won't allow this in regard to it's soldiers and decided to leave to protect it's soldiers from wrongful prosecutions and this is why the U.S. military originally left Iraq after the Iraq war was concluded.
