As the Tectonic plate moved over thousands of years or more it created Midway Island all the way down to the Big Island of Hawaii. So, Kauai, Oahu, Molokai, Maui and the Big Island of Hawaii were all created this way. I'm thinking the plate must have slowed down to make such a big island of Hawaii which is a 400 mile drive around the coast of it. But, it is getting bigger and bigger now every day this eruption continues on. IN the larger map below you can see the area being devastated and likely killing many birds and animals through resparatory ailments if they don't move to other parts of the islands. However, plants and trees cannot move (unless people move them somehow) so they will burn now if they haven't already along with any homes, people or cars or out buildings or power plants in the way of the lava. But, also this means the island is getting bigger as it moves to the sea.
Is it theoretically possible that this could go on for 20 or 30 years like this?
Theoretically the answer is "YES!" but that is also unlikely but could also happen.
But, during this time a lot of people are going to relocate to other parts of the island, the mainland and all over the world to stay alive and to be able to breathe okay while all this is going on on the big island.
