Volkswagen has been pursuing an aggressive electric vehicle strategy elsewhere and it’s now turning its attention to another major market, the United States. The German auto giant has confirmed that it plans to manufacture its electric microbus and crossover SUV in the United States.
Volkswagen has confirmed to Autocar that it’s going to manufacture the I.D. BUZZ electric microbus and I.D. CROZZ Concept in the United States. It’s aiming to launch the vehicles in 2022.
“For strong product momentum, they need to be produced in the USA. It’s not possible to come into a high-volume scenario with imported cars. We want to localize electric mobility in the US,” said Hinrich Woebcken, the VW boss in North America.
VW unveiled a working prototype of the I.D. BUZZ electric microbus last year. It’s a new iteration of the company’s iconic campervan. A fully kitted out model will feature all-wheel drive and a massive 111kWh battery for a range of 270 miles.
The I.D. CROZZ Concept will have dual motors with 75kW in the front and 150kW in the back. The 83kWh battery should be able to provide a range of 310 miles on a single charge. It’s obviously too soon to say right now how much these electric vehicles are going to be priced at in the United States.
