Though it wasn't all bad, generally it was the older sibling or one of the older kids in the neighborhood that would accompany the kids to school. Think of it more like a 'boomer carpool'.
end quote from:
For awhile my next door neighbor and I walked home from school several miles by ourselves when we were 6 years old in 1st grade.
. However,
we had to walk by a boy's house several years older than us who banged our heads
together and gave us headaches. So, in order to avoid this boy we ran across
Foothill blvd. in Tujunga,California. But, the problem with this was that we
ran across 4 lanes of traffic with people doing 35 to 60 miles per hour without a
stop light. So, one of the teachers from Pinewood School stopped us and asked us
why we were doing this. We told her about the boy who hit our heads together and
he was expelled from school for hurting us. But, then it got worse because then
my grandmother who was very old then tried to walk across many stones and broke
her ankle to meet us one day and then she couldn't walk for a couple of month.
So, then I think someone drove us to school after that. So, it was a long process
of finding a safe way to get us to school. This would have been in the early 1950s.
