The River Fire was started by a lightning strike Sunday afternoon near Toro Peak, approximately five miles south of Salinas.
Firefighters continue to build containment lines, however fire officials say hot, dry weather and the absence of marine layer has made vegetation more receptive resulting in increased fire intensity and rates of spread and longer burn periods.
