Home to SF Bay Area

I started to get a sore throat last night and realized I had had enough of the smoke breathings since around last Thursday. My wife agreed as it was getting her throat and sinuses too being in heavy smoke a part of every day outside. The last two days the smoke was less in the day and you could see the mountain clearly for the first time since we had been in Mt. Shasta. However, last night there was a 20,000 foot high pyrocumulous cloud over Mt. Shasta just before sunset and around there while we ate dinner with four friends from aound the area outside at one of our friend's acreage and home.

Yesterday I went up to Castle Lake for swimming and usually it doesn't get as warm as it was until maybe August if ever that year. So, it was sort of like swimming in a swimming pool rather than an alpine lake because it was so warm. The firefighters were not allowed to use Castle lake water for putting out fires because it is so low also. But, likely they might have been allowed to take water from Lake Siskiyou. However, I'm just not sure about that.

As we drove down Interstate 5 past the Salt Fire where many structures burned we saw water tankers along the freeway there to fill up fire engines water tanks from the forest service as well as Cal Fire Fire engines. They all are 4 wheel drive units because they are asked to go almost anywhere on literally any dirt or paved or loose rock road to put out the fires this time of year all over the state.

Driving down to Redding it was at least 100 degrees there and is expected to be 113 degrees there in Redding Saturday and Sunday this week and 104 in Mt. Shasta. Most days in Shasta were between 95 and 100 degrees with smoke most days we were there.

As I write this Tuesday night at around 9:30 it is around 58 degrees here at the beach.

But, driving south it was about 95 to 100 degrees until we got closer to the coast and then it dropped from 95 to 100 to first 86 then 80 until we got close to the coast it was down to about 61 degrees around sunset.
