A wildfire burning in rugged terrain has prompted evacuation orders southeast of Placerville.
The Caldor Fire was officially estimated at 53,772 acres (82 square miles) on Wednesday morning — up more than 30,000 acres from 12 hours previous, and 47,000 acres from Tuesday morning.
The fire started on Saturday evening near the Middle Fork of the Cosumnes River about three miles south of Grizzly Flats. Firefighters have been hindered by steep hillsides and dense forest.
On Tuesday, the El Dorado County sheriff’s office ordered evacuations for residents on both sides of Highway 50, from Camino on the west to Kyburz on the east. Those towns include Cedar Grove, Pollock Pines, Fresh Pond, Pacific House and White Hall. The order also covers Loon Lake, Union Valley Reservoir and Ice House Reservoir.
Earlier orders covered communities between Highway 50 and Highway 88, including Sly Park, Grizzly Flats, Happy Valley, Leoni Meadows and Caldor.
The evacuation centers in Diamond Springs and Cameron Park are full. As of Wednesday, there was space at Green Valley Church, 3500 Missouri Flat Road in Placerville.
The fire is about three miles from the Amador County line, but it is growing in the opposite direction. All the warnings and orders so far are in El Dorado County.
