A few years ago my wife and I and a friend rented two bedrooms aboard the Zephyr Train from Emeryville, California (near Berkeley) to Denver, Colorado to visit my son who was studying then in Fort Collins, Colorado. If you are interested in the Colorado River and want to see more closely parts of it that are hard to see except by Air or Train the Zephyr between Emeryville and Denver is one way to do this.
I was amazed at how beautiful this area is and it was easier for the people originally building the railroad to follow the Colorado River West a lot of the way simply because they always had water to drink and to use for various things along the way in the 1800s. And from the Continental Divide out quite a ways they also had trees to cut down for railroad ties to make too. So, both from a water point of view and from a railroad tie point of view staying near the River and trees was generally a good idea as far as they could do this.
